It has been a big week for tutocity with our last 2 tutorials making the home page of www.good-tutorials.com and one of our designs was featured on deviantart. We hope to continue our recent success with our next group of tutorials that will be releasing soon.

Basic Smudge Sig Tutorial

Step 4: Create a new layer and call it "Fade" Select the "Rectangular marquee tool" and make a full selection of the image, then move down the selection 3 pixels using the arrow keys. Now select the "Gradient tool" and copy the settings below. Remember to select "Radial gradient"

Now with the "Gradient tool" start at the very top center of your selection and drag veticly down untill its about double the height of you image. Lower the opacity and it should looking something like below.

Step 5: Now we are going to place a 1 pixel black border around the sig. To do this make sure your background color is set to black and then go Image > Canvas size. Change the scaling from inches to pixels and then increase the width and height by 2 pixels each. So your canvas size should now be 422 pixels wide and 122 pixels high. When that is done click OK. You should now have a 1 pixel black border around your sig.

Step 6: Now we are going to add some final lighting effects to the sig. Create a new layer then Select the brush tool and then hit f5 to bring the the brushes menu. Copy the settings below.

Set your foreground color to white and brush small amounts over the top of your sig. Try to get it looking something like mine below.

When yours looks something like mine above go Filter > Blur > Motion Blue and copy the settings below.

Set the layer blending mode to "Overlay" and your image should look something like below.

Step 7: The last step is just to add some text.

Some text tips:

  • Try not to overdo it, keep it simple for the best effect.
  • Arial always looks great.
  • Try to use similar colores to your sig.

Finished result: Click on the image to see it in full size.
